Bandol, France Travel Guide: Why This Seaside Town Belongs on Your South of France Itinerary

When most travelers plan a trip to the South of France, they immediately think of Nice, Cannes and Saint-Tropez. But farther west, between Marseille and Toulon, is a seaside town that offers so much of what people dream of finding on the Mediterranean coast: colorful fishing boats, clear blue water, excellent Provençal food, local boutiques and long lunches overlooking the sea.

Bandol feels polished without being performative and beautiful without feeling overrun. There are no big designer storefronts or wildly expensive beach clubs. Instead, you will find a lively port, small beaches and coves, a traditional food market and the vineyards that produce some of Provence's most celebrated wines, and my personal favorite, Bandol Rosé.

There are plenty of wonderful things to do in Bandol, France, but the real reason to visit is the way the town makes you slow down. Swim in the morning. Order fresh seafood for lunch. Walk into town for ice cream after dinner. Repeat the next day.

My husband, Chef Sébastien Giannini, grew up nearby in Toulon and worked at the Hôtel Île Rousse in Bandol earlier in his career. Returning to the hotel, the five-star Thalazur Bandol Île Rousse, feels like coming home to us. We know the French Riviera both as former residents and as a family returning with our children, and Bandol is one of the places we look forward to visiting again and again.

If you are deciding whether Bandol deserves a place on your South of France itinerary, my answer is absolutely yes. Here is why.

Why visit Bandol instead of Cannes or Saint-Tropez?

I love the glamour of the French Riviera, but it often comes with a price tag. Compared with Cannes or Saint-Tropez, Bandol can feel like a steal. You can stay at a beautiful seaside hotel, eat exceptionally well and spend your day at the beach without feeling as though every experience has been designed for status or spectacle.

That does not mean Bandol lacks glamour. During our stays at Thalazur Bandol Île Rousse, we have found ourselves beside well-known French celebrities and local dignitaries, including the mayor of Toulon. The difference is that the atmosphere remains discreet. People come to relax, swim and eat well, not to turn the beach into a runway.

Bandol is not the destination for wild nightlife or enormous beach clubs. Choose Saint-Tropez if that is the center of your vacation. Choose Bandol if your idea of luxury is a sea-view balcony, a beautiful lunch in your swimsuit, an afternoon swim and an evening walk to the port for ice cream.

The best things to do in Bandol, France

1. Spend the day at Plage de Rènecros

Plage de Rènecros is a sheltered cove close to the center of Bandol. Its calm, clear water and protected setting make it a wonderful place to swim, particularly when traveling with children.

This is the sort of beach day I dream about all year: no complicated itinerary, no rushing from one attraction to another, just a swimsuit, a book and the Mediterranean in front of you.

The Thalazur Bandol Île Rousse sits directly on the bay, giving hotel guests easy access to the water as well as the pool, spa and private beach area.

2. Have lunch at La Goélette

La Goélette, the beach restaurant at Thalazur Bandol Île Rousse, serves the best beach food we have tried in the South of France.

You can sit down in your swimsuit, order a bottle of chilled Bandol rosé and eat beautifully prepared seafood with the water just steps away. The clam linguine is the dish I still think about. The perfectly cooked fresh langoustines are the stuff dreams are made of.

Stay through the afternoon and watch the sunlight change over the Baie de Rènecros. If you time your visit for sunset, even better. Fresh seafood, local rosé, the Mediterranean and nowhere else you need to be. Heaven.

Menus change with the season and the catch, so treat these dishes as inspiration and order what is freshest when you visit. Reserve ahead during the summer, particularly if you want a table with a prime view of the water.

3. Walk along the port

The port is the center of daily life in Bandol. Traditional fishing boats sit alongside larger yachts, and the waterfront is lined with cafés, restaurants and shops.

Go for a walk in the morning while the town is waking up, return for an apéritif before dinner and walk it again after dark. Our favorite evening ritual is wonderfully simple: we walk from the hotel toward the port and stop for ice cream. The children choose their flavors, we continue along the waterfront and the entire town seems to be outside enjoying the evening.

It is not a headline-making activity, but it is one of those small rituals that turns a vacation destination into a place you want to return to.

4. Shop the independent boutiques

Shopping in Bandol is fun because it still feels approachable. You will not find streets dominated by the same international luxury brands you see in Cannes, Monaco or Saint-Tropez.

Instead, the center is filled with reasonably priced little boutiques selling dresses, accessories, home goods, beachwear and souvenirs. It is an easy place to find something that actually reminds you of your trip rather than something you could have purchased anywhere else.

Leave room in your suitcase for Provençal linens, woven market bags, foutas (colorful cotton towels $10-$15 each), local food products and the little fashion finds you did not know you needed.

5. Visit the markets and Place de la Liberté

To see Bandol at its most local, begin at Place de la Liberté. The town square, also associated with the town hall and daily market, is where residents stop for fresh produce, fish, meat, cheese and other ingredients for the day.

Bandol also holds its large Provençal market along the port on Tuesday mornings. The stalls bring together seasonal fruit and vegetables, local producers, regional specialties, clothing and artisan goods. Go early, both for the best selection and to enjoy the market before the heat of the day.

For me, visiting a French food market is never just about shopping. It reveals how a town eats. Look at the tomatoes, melons and zucchini in summer, see what has arrived from the fishing boats and notice what the locals are carrying home for lunch.

Market schedules can change around holidays and special events, so confirm the current hours with the Bandol tourism office before your visit.

6. Taste the wines of Bandol

Many people know Bandol first as a wine appellation. The region is particularly respected for its Mourvèdre-based red wines, but its rosés and whites also belong at the table. In the US we are fortunate to be getting more access to Bandol Rosé wines, even Trader Joes began stocking a great Bandol Rosé!

This is not merely a place where rosé matches the scenery. Bandol wines have structure, character and a strong sense of the limestone soils, sunshine and sea air of this part of Provence.

You can begin by ordering a local bottle with lunch, visit a wine shop in town or plan a tasting at one of the surrounding domaines. A car is useful for exploring the vineyards, but arrange transportation if everyone in your party intends to taste.

7. Walk the Sentier du Littoral

The coastal path, or Sentier du Littoral, follows the Mediterranean past beaches, coves, ochre-colored rock and umbrella pines. It gives you a very different view of Bandol from the lively port.

Walk as much or as little as suits your day. Wear proper shoes, carry water and avoid the strongest midday heat in summer. Access can occasionally be restricted because of weather or wildfire risk, so check local conditions before setting out.

8. Make Bandol your base for exploring the western Riviera

Bandol is well positioned for discovering this less internationally famous part of the South of France. Toulon, Sanary-sur-Mer, Cassis, Le Castellet and the vineyards of the Var can all become part of a longer itinerary.

This is another reason I recommend staying for more than a day. Bandol gives you a comfortable seaside base to return to after exploring, and you still get your evening swim and walk to the port.

Where to stay in Bandol: Thalazur Bandol Île Rousse

For our family, there is nowhere more meaningful to stay than the Thalazur Bandol Île Rousse.

Sébastien worked at the Hôtel Île Rousse earlier in his career, so returning is emotional for us. It is not simply a hotel we like. It is connected to his story as a chef and to our life in the South of France and he still connected with the team there.

The five-star hotel sits between the port and Plage de Rènecros, with direct access to the sea. The recently remodeled rooms feel fresh and comfortable. Choose a room with a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean if it fits your budget. Waking up to that expanse of blue and sitting outside before breakfast is worth it.

The location also makes Bandol remarkably easy. You can spend the day swimming, walk into town to shop or eat, and return without getting in the car. The hotel includes a thalassotherapy spa, pools and several dining options, making it equally suited to a relaxed weekend for two or a family stay.

Bandol also has lots of Air BnB options. Check that you are within walking distance to Place de la Liberté for the best location.

A Michelin-starred dinner at Les Oliviers

For a special dinner in Bandol, reserve a table at Les Oliviers, the Michelin-starred restaurant at the Thalazur Bandol Île Rousse.

The cooking is beautiful, but what makes the experience memorable is its true expression of place. You can taste that you are in Provence. The sea, the local produce and the Mediterranean landscape are not simply part of the view. They are expressed on the plate.

Executive Chef Martin Féragus leads the savory kitchen, while his wife, Pastry Chef Fleur Féragus, directs the pâtisserie. Their work feels connected, with a sense of precision and balance that carries the meal from the first course through dessert.

Save room for the cheese course. In a region where long meals are still meant to unfold slowly, cheese is not an afterthought or something to rush past on the way to dessert. Let the experience take its time.

This is refined dining, but it remains rooted in the ingredients and flavors of Provence. For us, that is what the best luxury on the French Riviera should be: a deep sense of where you are.

A relaxed one-day itinerary for Bandol

If you only have one day in Bandol, this is how I would spend it:

Morning: Arrive early and walk through the daily market at Place de la Liberté. If it is Tuesday, explore the larger Provençal market along the port. Browse the independent shops before the day becomes too warm.

Lunch: Reserve a table at La Goélette. Order the fresh seafood of the day and a bottle of Bandol rosé.

Afternoon: Swim at Plage de Rènecros or walk a portion of the coastal path. I highly recommend reserving a beach chair for the optimum French Riviera experience. The "plagist" will put your bottle of Rosé on ice and rotate your parasol as the sun shifts.

Early evening: Return to the port for an apéritif and watch the town shift into its evening rhythm.

Dinner: Choose Les Oliviers for a special occasion, or enjoy a casual meal near the port. L'Auberge du Port is a personal favorite as well.

After dinner: Finish with an ice cream and a slow walk along the water.

How many days do you need in Bandol?

You can experience the center, port and beach in one full day, but Bandol is best enjoyed slowly. I recommend staying for two or three nights if your schedule allows.

That gives you one day to do very little, which is exactly the point, and another to visit the market, explore the vineyards or take a trip to a neighboring town.

How to get to Bandol

Bandol has a train station and can be reached by regional train from Marseille or Toulon. Bandol is approximately 20 minutes from Toulon and 45 minutes from Marseille by road, although summer traffic can make travel times longer.

Once you arrive, the port, town center, market and main beaches are walkable. You do not need a car for a restful stay centered around the town. Rent one if you want to explore vineyards, hilltop villages and more of the Var.

Is Bandol worth visiting?

Bandol is absolutely worth visiting for travelers who want the beauty and pleasure of the South of France without building an entire vacation around crowds, designer boutiques and exclusive beach clubs.

Come for the beaches, markets, boutiques and wine. Stay for the long lunches, evening ice creams and the feeling that you have discovered a Mediterranean town where people are still living their everyday lives.

Bandol does not ask you to see and be seen. It invites you to exhale.
