A French-Inspired Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day in France, known as La Fête des Mères, is a time to slow down, set the table with love, and indulge in the kind of thoughtful dishes that make maman feel truly cherished. While the official date differs slightly from the American holiday (it falls on the last Sunday of May or the first in June), the sentiment is the same: expressing love and gratitude through delicious food and meaningful moments.

A Simple & Chic French Breakfast in Bed
There’s something so luxurious about starting the day with breakfast in bed. French Mother’s Day calls for simplicity, beauty, and, of course, deliciousness. I used to bring breakfast in bed to my mom growing up, and now my kids do the same to me! It is my favorite moment of the day.
French-Style Breakfast Menu:

- Freshly baked croissants or pain au chocolat (store-bought and warmed in the oven work perfectly!)
- Homemade café au lait in her favorite mug
- A bowl of fresh berries with a drizzle of honey and some lemon zest
- A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or a mimosa
If you're up for a little something extra, serve Smoked Salmon Tartines Savory salmon, fresh dill and effortlessly elegant with a touch of luxury.

French Mother’s Day Traditions to Inspire You
In France, Mother’s Day isn’t about lavish gifts—it’s about meaningful gestures and time spent together. Here are a few traditions that capture the spirit of La Fête des Mères:

A Handmade Card
French children often create handmade cards or poems at school to give to their mothers. Take a page from their book—write a few heartfelt words or a short poem in French.
Example:
Maman chérie, je t’aime de tout mon cœur. Merci pour tout ce que tu fais. Bonne fête des mères !
(Darling Mom, I love you with all my heart. Thank you for everything you do. Happy Mother’s Day!)
A Home-Cooked Meal
In France, it’s common for partners and children to take over the kitchen on Mother’s Day. Even the simplest meal feels special when made with love.
A Flowering Plant Instead of a Bouquet
Many French families gift a flowering plant—something that lasts beyond the day and brightens the home for weeks to come. Hydrangeas, roses, or lavender are all lovely choices.

Setting the Mood – French Style
Ambiance is everything. Light a candle (preferably lavender or rose-scented), play a chansons françaises playlist on Spotify, and keep the pace of the day slow and intentional. The French art de vivre is about savoring life’s little moments.
Last-Minute Tips for a Seamless Celebration
- Make what you can ahead of time: Yogurt cake, ratatouille, and vinaigrette can all be prepped the day before.
- Keep it simple: Choose one “wow” recipe (like the scallops!) and keep the rest relaxed.
- Add a personal touch: Whether it’s a love note or her favorite tea, these small details matter most.
No matter where you are in the world, bringing a little bit of France into your Mother’s Day celebration makes it feel special, warm, and effortlessly elegant. After all, French cooking is not about perfection—it’s about sharing love, creating memories, and celebrating life around the table. Find my 20 favorite French Mother's Day recipes below.
